Get
your AMA license.
Aside
from being necessary, you will get flight liability insurance and a
great monthly magazine. It's a good way to familiarize yourself
with the hobby and the AMA rules.
Once
you see them, you will realize they are simply common sense
safety-oriented requirements. This is a great hobby, and no one
wants to get hurt. That is primarily what the rules are for.
Obtain
a county aerodrome permit.
A
permit may be obtained from Cedar Creek Park, located on the south
side of Merrick Road in Seaford, just east of Wantagh Parkway. Detailed
directions are:
The
entrance to
Cedar
Creek
Park
is about 1/4 mile east of the
Wantagh
Parkway
on
Merrick
Road
.
Enter the Park and stay on the main road. After about 1/4 mile, the
road begins to loop around to the left. At this point you will come up
on a small building with a cul-de-sac driveway and a tall flagpole in
front. This is the building where you can apply for or renew your
permits. There is a small employee parking lot to the left of this
building, as you look at it from the front. Just past the County
building is a small enclosure where people bring their dogs to run. If
you go past this, you've gone too far. The times for getting
your flying permits are as follows: Fri, Sat and Sunday
10
AM-4 PM
.
Bring your 2007 AMA insurance card, your last year's permit and a
Nassau
County
Leisure
Pass
if you are a county resident.
Nassau
residents must also obtain a leisure pass, if they don't already have
one. You'll need your AMA number, so it's a good idea to get
your AMA license before going to Cedar Creek.
Join
the club.
Come
down to a meeting and fill out the paperwork. You will need your
AMA license, your Nassau County Aerodrome Permit, and yearly dues.
Dues for the Long Island Silent Flyers is $35.00 per year. There is an additional one time
initiation fee of $25.00. This initiation fee is waved if the new
member is already a member of another club.
If
you would like to fill out an application to bring with you, you can
get it here.
You
will get a key to the gate at Stillwell Woods, and receive monthly
newsletters. We will be trying to move to email for
delivery of the newsletter, so if you can receive email, let us
know.
